Getting on the ballot

To change the way congressional district lines are created, it will be necessary to change the Ohio Constitution. This requires Ohioans to vote on any proposed change.

Section 1a of Article 2 of the Ohio Constitution gives citizens groups like Fair Congressional Districts for Ohio the right to use the citizens initiative to amend the Ohio Constitution. For a citizens group to put an amendment on the ballot for voters to approve/disapprove, the group must collect 305,591 signatures of registered voters (10% of the last gubernatorial elections).  From 44 of Ohio’s 88 counties, there must be signatures equal to at least 5% of the total vote cast for the office of governor in that county at the last gubernatorial election.
